2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming seems particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
If these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be on the verge of a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
