2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Reception
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a clearer direction.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Recruitment
The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire message from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a clearer vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of the team. After some time of talks, Ben officially joins us on the specified date.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having spent the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in greeting him in the coming days. We are all eager to continue observing the progress of the game in the time to ahead.
David
