American Attack on Venezuela Raises Concerns of Potential Danish Territory Takeover.

The recent American bombardment in the South American nation and the detention of its leader have sparked unease regarding Washington's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Members of the former president's political movement have reportedly focused on the strategically important island in the wake of the events in South America.

Provocative Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely a short time following the initiation of the Caracas campaign, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is the spouse of a senior presidential adviser, shared a suggestive map. The graphic showed Greenland covered in the American flag, with the cryptic message: "SOON."

This blatant threat to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the NATO alliance, provoked immediate and strong condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should keep work together as such. American security is also Greenland’s and our security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to guarantee security in the North."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that Denmark had significantly increased its military budget this year, earmarking a large sum specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we expect full recognition for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he emphasized.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were further complicated by the previous appointment of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "privilege" to work in a volunteer role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

After the military action in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has consistently unnerved European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The territory is considered vitally important for national security and potential mineral exploitation. It currently houses the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the leader refused to rule out the resorting to armed action to gain control of Greenland. This position comes amid growing global rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Tensions and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of both Greenland issued a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot annex other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the territory's inhabitants desire self-rule from Copenhagen, there is simultaneously little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare independence for over a decade.

Analyst View: A Plausible Scenario?

Some analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One policy director focusing in defence admitted she had previously discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
