Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.

AI-generated graphics claiming to show Nicolás Maduro in custody following his apprehension by the US have garnered tens of millions of impressions online.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Appeared Within Hours

The first fake AI image apparently showing him being escorted off a aircraft surfaced within hours. The graphic was unpublished by any verified American sources; it was instead published on X by an account purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Our analysis used the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was produced or modified with Google AI.

More AI-generated images began to spread in the following hours, appearing to show more angles of Maduro under guard. Noticeable logos on the graphics reveal they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

AI analysis says all of these pictures were also generated or edited AI technology.

Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued

The former US president released the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. However, despite the authentic image was released, synthetic pictures persisted online but were altered to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics indicate these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Once again, analysis says these further images were produced with generative artificial intelligence.

Main Takeaways:

  • AI-generated content circulated quickly after the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The first fake image was shared on the same day on platform X.
  • Detection software like Google’s SynthID were used to verify the pictures as AI-generated.
  • Fake images continued to circulate and be updated despite the publication of authentic images.
  • The source of several fakes was linked to social media profiles dedicated to AI art.
