Fallout 76 Unveils Significant Expansion Including Classic Fallout References and Walton Goggins
This marks the 64th significant expansion following its launch, Fallout 76 is preparing to introduce its largest expansion yet during the holiday season. Titled the new expansion, this massive update will introduce new weapons, additional quests, and take players to the newly accessible region of the Ohio wasteland.
A Notable Journey
Previously, the notion of this online Fallout experience obtaining such a substantial update multiple years after release would have appeared highly unlikely. At the time the online experience first launched in 2018, it received negative reviews from reviewers and gamers who considered the initial version unpolished and half-baked. Some thought it would suffer the same fate as other live-service attempts of that time.
We have continuously trusted in this project, commented the creative director. The initial release was kind of like the beginning of our journey. People come out and they initially find much content, and they explore their environment. Our approach was primarily staying focused and persistently develop the experiences that we know our community will enjoy, and that we as players ourselves.
Discovering Fresh Ground
This expansion represents the biggest ever update to date. The primary aspect is the map expansion, allowing players to venture outside into the Ohio region and discover what developments have occurred there. Heads up: Nothing good!
For the development team that venturing into a different region after so many years in West Virginia presented an ideal situation to experiment with an untouched location within the Fallout lore.
We hadn't thoroughly investigated Ohio in the Fallout lore in depth, commented the development lead. Starting from the existing territory, if you head eastward, you begin entering the Capital Wasteland. That area is thoroughly developed. Ohio hasn't really been touched on significantly. Therefore, this installment being occurring before in the timeline offers us numerous storytelling options. The team wanted to discover what's transpiring in this new region!
Finding Influence from Classic Titles
The most stands out about Fallout 76's depiction of Ohio is that it's developed as a desert wasteland. This may look unusual given the real-world location of the region, but there's a deliberate reason for this creative choice: The appearance was heavily inspired by Fallout 3 and the Mojave Desert.
Rather than exactly duplicating elements from those games, the designers focused on capturing the core feeling of those games within this update.
It wasn't focused on examining those games and stating we want specific elements, clarified the creative director. The objective sought to create was adopting the unique atmosphere of those classic experiences and having that properly represented in this expansion. What I communicated to the developers when we started development on the new region was: It needs to feature dry regions, Deathclaws, and plenty of enemies. In my view, that embodies what Fallout 3 and the Vegas title characterize. Those are the essential elements that establish the unique atmosphere of those experiences, and so I aimed to have that reflected here.
Amazon Show Integration
The popularity of the Fallout television series generated a significant rise in player numbers for the online game, with statistics indicating a six or seven player growth. The development team realized they needed to capitalize on this situation, but lacked the necessary time to create a full crossover right away.
The solution came through organic development when the team discovered the perfect connection with The Ghoul, who serves as a bounty hunting vendor within the new expansion.
We were figuring out what this additional area would feature, what the overall tone would be, and then what the primary feature of the fresh territory would become, that's hunter quests, stated the development lead. What person better to host such activities than The Ghoul? Since he is a dedicated fan of the franchise too, he was quite willing to work with us and make this happen. So it wasn't originally from the beginning, but it emerged through natural progression of the feature.
Coming Updates
This expansion doesn't represent the concluding content addition for the MMO. The studio is currently developing on the initial major next year's content and preparing more expansions continuing as far as the seventy-second addition.
There was a time where we never thought there would actually happen an that many content additions, stated the development lead. Now we're at a point where things are so successful, for both the show and the game. It's actually quite remarkable to think that there's an update 76 that will then sync up with, you know, future developments!
Persistent popularity of Fallout 76 stands as a testament to the studio's dedication and clear direction to building upon their original concept while naturally including additional features that improve rather than compromise the established world.
