German Drone Disruptions Add to the Continent’s Security Concerns
Munich joins a increasing number of European airports impacted by drone sightings in the past few days, including 17 canceled journeys, fifteen rerouted, and numerous travelers dealing with problems to their travel during the night.
Multiple witnesses claimed seeing drones in the vicinity of the airfield, with a subsequent observation later confirmed inside the restricted zone, obliging aviation authorities to halt activities during review.
It is still uncertain how many, or of what type, unmanned aircraft were engaged.
The disruption comes shortly prior to the final days of the Oktoberfest event, which had earlier encountered problems a few days ago due to a reported danger in the city.
The German air navigation service, the German aviation control body responsible for the German airspace, said recently that UAV observations near airfields are rising, with 144 cases so far in this year, versus 113 last year, and 99 in 2023.
Expect the sightings and the related issues to spark the discussion about Europe’s aviation security, just after the European Union summit in Copenhagen revealed certain disputes – mostly along territorial boundaries – about the newly proposed “UAV barrier” initiative.
Today is the third of October, 2025, and here is the latest from Europe.
