Teenager Found Deceased Following False Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
A teenage boy was found dead just days after being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a dead baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Accusations Start
The investigation learned how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her offspring. The message added: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony read to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from authorities later concluded the supposed burglary victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that said property was not stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged taken remains attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely distressing", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had entered the house because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings learned that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
Educational Response
The inquest received testimony from school staff at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she called Kai's parents' landline and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not got that communication.
Official Conclusion
Senior coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Providing a narrative conclusion, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the police and following his questioning he was released while inquiries proceeded."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or added to his death and although it was the result of a personal act it is not possible to determine his purpose."
